International Sports Leaders Get Girls in the Game
Identified as a leader in sports and healthy lifestyle programming for girls, Girls in the Game was selected by WorldChicago as a partner as they hosted leaders in women’s sports from around the world.
The delegation of women sports leaders came from six different countries as a part of the Empowering Women and Girls Through Sports project of the U.S. Department of State. Showcasing best practices in sports for girls and women, Chicago was selected as one of the cities to be visited. WorldChicago, the project host for Chicago, requested that Girls in the Game meet with the delegates and share information on their evidence-based and award-winning sports and healthy lifestyle programs for girls.
Continuing efforts to use sports as a means to empower women and girls worldwide, the U.S. Department of State has launched a three-part initiative, consisting of sports visitor, sports envoy, and sports mentorship. Girls in the Game looks forward to working with World Chicago and the State Department on this initiative.
Aligned to the goals of the Department of State, Girls in the Game led an interactive presentation that addressed the following key areas:
• To explore how athletic youth leagues and sports programs for women and girls promote leadership, teamwork, respect, self-awareness and life skills;
• To examine the impact of sports and recreation programs for at-risk and underserved youth;
• To highlight how sports advance gender equality, combat discrimination, promote understanding, and provide social opportunities;
• To learn about community outreach and advocacy for youth centers and athletic activities for girls.
Following the presentation, the delegates joined Girls in the Game for some hands-on fun with active games that promote leadership and team-building. Delegates expressed an interest in continued opportunities to work with Girls in the Game to impact the lives of girls globally.
